Split Rock Lighthouse
Perched 130 feet above Lake Superior on its north
shore is picturesque Split Rock Lighthouse. Built
in 1909-10, at a cost of $75,000.00, Split Rock guided
ships with its beacon for nearly 60 years until radar
rendered it obsolete. From it’s beginning Split Rock
attracted tourists, but until a road was built in 1924
it was accessible only by water. The construction
of the lighthouse was possible only after hauling
materials up the cliff with a steam powered hoist.
The prism quartz lens was ground in France
in the late 1800’s. It was first lit with a kerosene
lantern but was replaced by a 1,000-watt elec-
tric bulb. The beacon, which can be seen for
22 miles or more, is only visible on November
10th; the anniversary of the sinking of the
Edmund Fitzgerald. Now part of the state
historic sites system, Split Rock is the most
visited historic site in Minnesota. $17.00 |
