Old Central High School
Built in 1891-92 at a cost of $500,000.00, the original Duluth
Central High School is a commanding presence on the
hillside of Duluth. Upon completion, Central was
hailed as the most beautiful school in the country,
due in part to the ornate statuary and chandeliers
adorning the halls. The clocktower, containing
Westminster chimes, soars to a height of 230 ft.
Each illuminated dial is 10 1/2 ft. wide.
Constructed of Minnesota Brownstone, quarter
sawn oak, white birch and sycamore, this
romanesque structure saw nearly 80 years
of commencement ceremonies before being
retired in 1971. Defying demolition due
to the outcry of Duluth’s citizens,
it underwent interior alterations
and was given new life as the home
of the Board of Education in 1976. $17.00 | This unique full-color bookmark features (Old) Duluth Central High School Built in the Romanesque style of architecture in 1891-92 at a cost of $500 000.00. Bookmark is complete with facts, dates and historic information. $1.50 |
