Gooseberry Falls State Park

Located on Lake Superior’s north shore on highway 61, at mile marker 39, Gooseberry Falls cascades in three stages on its way to the big lake. “Gooseberry Falls” is a translation of the Anishinabe word “Shab- on-im-i-kan-i-sibi,” meaning “The place of Goose- berries River.” After the area was logged off at the turn of the century, the scenic beauty of the area was acknoweledged and the state bought 368 acres for a state park. During the 1930s the C.C.C. (Civilian Conservation Corps) set up camp on the west bank above the falls and built the original stone structures under the direction of Italian stonemasons. The stone was quarried in Duluth and Beaver Bay. In the 1990s the state replaced the original steel bridge with a similar structure and built a new interpretive center. The improvements were completed in 1998
