North Pier Light
The light tower on the north pierhead at the
Duluth’s ship canal was established in 1910,
despite the keystone above the doorway dated
1909. It contains a 5th order Fresnel Lens that
displayed a white beacon for decades until Oc-
tober 7th, 1999, when a red acrylic lens housing
was put in place. It was always meant to be red
to correspond with the ”red light returning” rule
of thumb. The white and black conical steel
tower, the shape referred to as a frustum, is 37
feet high. The beacon is 46 feet above the surface
of the lake. The Duluth ship canal was dug in
1871 and today, due to the completion of the
Saint Lawrence Seaway in the 1950s, welcomes
marine traffic from all over the world. Concrete
replaced the original wooden piers in 1898
and they stood unchanged until their reno-
vation and reinforcement in the 1980s. $17.00 |
