Two Harbors Lighthouse

Two Harbors Lighthouse on Agate Bay is the oldest working lighthouse in Minnesota. It was built in 1891 after a local landowner named Thomas Feigh sold the federal government an acre of his land for $1.00. The lighthouse opened in April of 1892. It’s beacon remains lit today. With the advent of sonar and ra- dar in the 1960s, Two Harbors lighthouse was no longer needed, but the beacon was necessary in order for it to remain on the National Register of Historic Places. The tower is 49 1/2 ft. tall and is 78 ft. above the lake. Before it was electrified, the beacon worked like a grandfather clock. Every two hours, the keeper had to pull the chains to keep the light operating. The beacon features two 1,000-watt bulbs that can be seen for 17 miles. On a clear night the beam can be seen from the south shore 26 miles away. On July 1, 1999, Lake County Historical Society opened the old lighthouse keeper’s quarters as a bed and breakfast.
