Enger Memorial Tower
Enger Memorial Tower was built in 1939
as a tribute to Bert J. Enger, a Norwegian
immigrant whose life reflected the American
dream. As a young man he went work
in a furniture store and eventually headed
his own successful business. His wealth
continued with real estate and shipyard
investments. Upon his death he bequeathed
two thirds of his estate to the city of Duluth.
A bronze plaque at the base of the tower pays
tribute to this truly self-made man. Built from
native Minnesota bluestone, the octagonal
observation tower stands 60 feet tall and com-
mands a 360 degree breathtaking view of Duluth
and its surroundings. At night the beacon on top
can be seen from up to 50 miles away. Extensive
repairs were made to the tower in 2011 in antic-
ipation of a visit from the king and queen of Norway.
