Aerial Lift Bridge
The Aerial Lift Bridge is undoubtedly Duluth’s
premier landmark. Constructed in 1904-05
at a cost of $111,000.00, its design was modeled
after a bridge in Rouen, France. Originally
built with a suspended carriage that traveled
back and forth with passengers and vehicles,
it was modified in 1929-30, with the addition
of the vertical lift, span at a cost of $400,000.00.
The vertical lift span is driven by four 125 h.p.
direct current motors. Two 500-ton concrete
counterweights at each end are raised and
lowered to operate the bridge according
to marine traffic. The top of the bridge at
its center is 227 feet above the water, and
the lift span is 386 feet long. At the height of
the shipping season, the bridge may be raised
and lowered up to 60 times a day. $17.00 |
